Vice mayor recast a homestead tax cut as $1.2 million city hall would rather keep

Vice Mayor Virginia Morgan used her July 13 comments to warn Beach voters against a statewide homestead-exemption increase — a tax cut she framed as a hole in city hall's take.

Morgan said she had already been the counterpoint at a Chamber of Commerce legislative update. She put the city's projected loss at half a million dollars the first year and $1.2 million the next, almost 10 percent of the budget, and tied that to whether public works keeps trimming trees and whether an email about the street still brings someone to the house in two days. The measure still needs 60 percent statewide.

Finance Director Patty Douylliez later told the board the same ballot item is why staff may have to revisit reserves and shove more overhead onto garbage and stormwater bills. The pitch from the dais was services, not the household that would keep the money.

Residents vote on the exemption this fall. The city said it may put out 'informational' materials before the election.
